When the same specimen shows double-digit differences in abrasion loss between two labs, the consumables — not the machine — are usually the cause.
Abrasion testing measures how much material is lost under a defined load and path. Load, abrasive sharpness and contact condition are the three governing variables, and consumables carry all three.

Grades are not interchangeable: CS-10 simulates mild wear, H-18 cuts far harder — results can differ several-fold.

The most dangerous failure. An over-used strip or abradant reads falsely low, so a non-conforming product passes.
3. Remove · Align · Secure
- Never touch wheel or finger faces with bare hands; never bend a DIN sheet.
- Keep the head concentric with the turntable (commonly ≤ 0.05 mm eccentricity); apply strips flat.
- Tighten diagonally in stages; run unloaded to confirm no noise or wobble.
A crescent-shaped mark instead of a uniform ring means eccentricity or an uneven wheel face.
4. Recalibrate After Every Change
- Martindale — verify 595 g / 795 g for 9 kPa / 12 kPa
- Taber — break in new wheels 2 × 50; verify 250/500/1,000 g; brush off debris
- DIN — re-check with the reference compound roughly every 10 tests; retest if spread exceeds 15 mg
- Crockmeter — verify 9 N and track length; condition per ISO 139
5. Storage Essentials
Temperature- and humidity-controlled (required for S-42 strips); flat, unloaded, unbent; condition wool abradant and cotton cloth per ISO 139; seal and date leftovers.
