PCT vs HAST Chamber: How to Choose the Right One for Your Reliability Testing

The selection depends on your testing objectives and product category:

PCT Test

  • Verify the intrinsic hydrolysis and corrosion resistance of packaging materials.
  • Assess interface reliability for wire bonds, encapsulation resin, plastic packaging compounds and lead frames.
  • Required by industry standards or customer specifications.
  • Cost advantage: PCT equipment is generally less expensive than HAST systems.

HAST Test

  • Delivers high acceleration factors to rapidly generate reliability data, ideal for R&D stages.
  • Designed for advanced high-density ICs (e.g., nanometer-process CPUs and GPUs).
  • Detects electric-field-induced failures including electrochemical corrosion, metal migration and gate oxide breakdown.
  • Supports dynamic testing with applied bias voltage.

HAST can be regarded as an enhanced, advanced variant of PCT.

PCT works like slow simmering: it runs under fixed conditions (121 ℃ / 100% RH). It accelerates aging via vapor condensation, focusing on package hermeticity and material durability.

HAST is like high-heat stir-frying: it adopts more flexible and harsher conditions with elevated temperature and unsaturated steam. It offers far stronger acceleration capability. Besides package-level evaluation, it reveals subtle electric-field-related failure mechanisms inside chips, typically under bias voltage.

For most modern electronics, HAST is gradually replacing PCT thanks to its faster fault detection. Nevertheless, PCT remains a dependable, cost-effective option for certain traditional applications and material characterization.
